AC Milan hosted the defending champions of La Liga, Atletico Madrid at the San Siro for their second Group B game of the 21/22 UEFA Champions League season. The defeat has put Milan down in fourth in the group of death, losing the first two games of their UCL campaign. AC Milan will have to make a comeback in the upcoming games if they have to keep any chances of qualifying to the knockout stages. Atletico Madrid’s win saw them move up to second in the group, as they will hope to go through the group along with Liverpool.

Stefano Pioli lined up AC Milan in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Mike Maignan starting in goal behind a back four consisting of left-back Theo Hernandez, centre-backs Alessio Romagnoli and Fikayo Tomori, and right-back Davide Calabria. Ismael Bennacer started as the defensive midfielder alongside Franck Kessie, who was later sent off just 30 minutes after kick-off. The attacking midfield trio included Rafael Leao on the left, Alex Saelemaekers on the right and Brahim Diaz as the central attacking midfielder. Ante Rebic led the line as their lone striker upfront.

The average positions of the Milan players show that they were fairly attacking in the match, as most of their players had their average positions in the opponent’s half. Ante Rebic had to drop deep on multiple occasions in order to help out his midfield in the buildup.

Diego Someone lined up the Atletico Madrid team in a 4-4-3 formation with Luis Suarez leading the line along with Angel Correa. The midfield of four included Yannick Carrasco at left-wing, Koke and Geoffrey Kondogbia, and right-winger Marcos Llorente. Jan Oblak started between the sticks behind a back four including left-back Mario Hermoso, centre backs Jose Gimenez and Felipe, and right back Kieran Tripper.

The average positions of the Atletico Madrid players show that their team played well against Milan, and was constantly pressing on the Milan players starting from upfront.

AC Milan had a decent game, as they took just seven shots in the game, and hit the target thrice. They had an xG of just 0.55 in the game, with just 40% possession and only 24 positional attacks. In contrast, visitors Atletico had an xG of 1.77 in the game where they took a total of 21 shots, though hitting the target only five times.

Luis Suarez had the highest individual xG in the match with 1.07, while Ante Rebic had the highest xG among the Milan players with 0.29. Jose Gimenez and Geoffrey Kondogbia both attempted 12 passes into the final third, as Suarez took five shots in the game. Brahim Diaz had nine successful dribbles in the match, which was the highest.

AC Milan’s shot map shows that they only took seven shots in the 90 minutes against Atletico, hitting the target thrice in the game. They scored their goals from the edge of the box on the right side through Rafael Leao.

The visitors shot map shows the enormous number of shots taken by Atletico Madrid, with a lot of shots taken from a long distance as well. they hit the target just three times in 21 shots and scored twice.

The xT creation timeline shows that both teams had a sort of similar xT generation in the first half, Milan having one big spike, while Atletico having two. The xG creation timeline shows that after having a similar xG in the first half, the visitors Atletico saw an enormous increase in their xG, as Milan’s xG stayed low like in the first half.

AC Milan’s pass matrix shows that they did not have a very large number of passes in the match as they had only 40% of the possession. Hernandez and Ismael Bennacer both attempted 45 passes each, also receiving 32 and 27 respectively. Also, defender Romagnoli had an impact as he also attempted 35 passes while receiving 28 for the home team. .The pass matrix for Atletico Madrid shows that they had a decent number of passes in the match to show for their 60% possession. Marcos Llorente attempted the most passes in the match with 64, followed by Felipe’s 63. Striker Correa received the most passes for Atleti with 47, followed by Llorente’s 43 and Koke’s 40.

The passing zones of The Rossoneri show that they had most of their passes completed on the defensive and midfield thirds. They put in a decent number of crosses into the box and also had a few smart passes. Brahim Diaz put in three successful passes into the opposition box.

The passing zones of Atletico Madrid show that they had a large concentration of passes in midfield with a lot of passes on the left wing-back in the attacking third. They put in a lot of crosses into the box as well but had only one smart pass. Second-half substitute Renan Lodi put in five crosses into the box, the highest number of crosses delivered by anyone in the match. Angel Correa also put in four crosses into the box while also making nine successful passes into the opposition box, followed by substitute Felix’s eight passes into the box.

The xT creation zones of AC Milan show that they did not have much effective passing in and around the penalty area, thereby being unable to create opportunities. Bennacer had the highest xT from passing among Milan players.

Other than Bennacer, Theo Hernandez, Brahim Diaz and Franck Kessie also had high xT from passing. Bennacer also had the highest xT generation from dribbling, followed by Theo Hernandez, Brahim Diaz and goal scorer Rafael Leao.

The xT creation zones of the visitors show that they had decent expected threat(xT) creation in and around the opposition penalty area. Angel Correa had the highest xT generation from passing.

Other than Correa, many other Atleti players had decent xT generation from their passing, including substitutes Griezzmann, Felix, de Paul and other starters Gimenez and Marcus Llorente.

Marcos Llorente also had the highest xT generation from dribbling followed by Correa, Felix and Thomas Lemar.

AC Milan had to face a lot of their defensive duels in the defensive third, with a few more in midfield as well. Many Milan players won one or two defensive duels each for the team.

As most of the game was played along the ground, there were very few aerial duels to be contested in the match. Tonali, Bennacer, Kessie and Romagnoli all won one aerial duel each for their team.

There were a very high number of loose ball duels in the match, especially in the attacking and defensive thirds. Brahim Diaz and substitute Olivier Giroud both made give loose ball recoveries each for the club.

Atletico Madrid had to face a very large number of defensive duels all over the pitch, especially on the left side of the entire length of the football field. Marcos Llorente won five defensive duels for them.

As mentioned earlier, there were not many aerial duels to be contested in the match. Felipe won four aerial duels for Atletico Madrid, followed by three wins for Gimenez.

There were surprisingly high loose ball duels in this game, especially in the attacking and defensive thirds. Felipe made a total of eight loose ball recoveries for his team in the game against AC Milan.

Diego Simeone’s side now has four points from their first two group games in the Group of Death, coming up to the second spot behind Liverpool who have six points. Pioli’s AC Milan are yet to register their first point in this group and will have to perform a lot better in the remaining group games if they want to give themselves any chance of going through to the knockout stages.
