Benfica started the match with a 3-4-3 formation with Darwin Nunez, Roman Yaremchuk and Rafa Silva in attack.
Benfica played with a deep defensive line with other players pushing up the pitch. The attacking players spent most of the time near the centre in the opposition half.
Barcelona came out on the pitch in a 3-4-1-2 formation with Memphis Depay and Luuk de Jong in attack with support from Pedri, who returned from an injury.
They played with a high defence line near the centre with the majority of their players in the other half playing through the middle.
Benfica had a total of 12 shots in the match keeping six of them on target, scoring three goals with an xG of 2.46. Barca on the other hand had seven shots failing to keep a single one on target with a low xG of 0.77.
The home side were defensively more active as Barca had more possession.
Nunez had the most shots in the match (5) with the highest xG of 1.12, scoring a brace. Sergio Busquets and Frenkie de Jong had the most passes into the final third(12).
Benfica had most of their shots from inside the box and scored all of their goals from there. They did force a few saves from the keeper but a lot of shots were off target.
The Blaugranas had almost all of their shots inside the box but could not keep a single one of them on target.
Benfica had the dream start and scored just after three minutes through Nunez. Barcelona tried to gain control back and dominated the majority of the match but they missed the easiest of chances in front of goal, failing to gain any kind of advantage from their domination. Benfica added a second goal around the 70-minute mark through Rafa Silva only to extend their lead to 3-0 from the penalty spot after Dest handled a ball inside the box.
The home side had 42% of the ball with Joao Mario playing the most passes(46) also receiving the most in return(36).
The visitors had 58% of possession with Sergino Dest playing the most passes(67). He also received the most passes(54).
Benfica played the most passes in the defensive third and on the left flank near midfield. They played 10 smart passes and nine of them were successful. They did not play a lot of crosses into the box with Nunez with the most deliveries(6)
Barca played the majority of their passes in the left-wing and midfield. They played four smart passes, three being successful. They delivered loads of crosses in the box from both flanks with Depay playing in the most(7)
The home team had the highest xT creating zones near the right-wing and outside the box on the left. Nicolas Otamendi and Lucas Verissimo had the highest passing accuracy in the team(96.15%)
Rafa Silva had the highest xT from passes(0.30) while Darwin Nunez lead the chart for dribbles(0.121)
There were only a few xT creating zones for Barca on the pitch, near the two wings only. Ronald Araujo was the best passer with 97.78% accuracy.
Depay had the most xT from both passes(1.15) and dribbles(0.074)
Benfica lost the majority of their defensive duels with Verissimo losing out on 11 occasions. Weigl, Joao Mario all were unimpressive.
But they were strong in aerial duels with Verissimo winning five duels. Otamendi was impressive.
There were good and bad performers in terms of 50-50 duels. Verissimo, Weigl and Mario won all of their duels while Rafa lost six times.
Barca were extremely poor in defensive duels. Eric Garcia lost eight of his duels while Dest, Araujo and Busquets lost four each.
They lost most of their aerial duels as well though there weren’t many. Roberto and Busquets lost all of their duels.
Eric Garcia won three loose ball duels while Luuk de Jong lost all duels higher up the pitch.
Benfica were extremely dangerous while attacking and rock solid in defence. It was an overall great performance from them and they deservedly won the match being the best team on the pitch. The confidence they got will do them greatly in the competition. The season just got bad to worse for Koeman’s men. They were unable to create many chances, failed to take what they created and were vulnerable defensively. Barcelona have now gone without a single shot on target for two consecutive matches and have a huge uphill battle in front of them to regain their past glory.
