The World Cup approaches but there’s still plenty going on in MLS.

Here is what you need to know this Wednesday.

Miami escape route for Ronaldo?

In case you missed it, Cristiano Ronaldo gave a rather incendiary interview over the weekend where he ripped into manager Erik ten Hag and Manchester United in general.

If some reports are to be believed, the Premier League giants will now look to cut their ties with the fading 37-year-old striker.

Former United star David Beckham, a co-owner of Inter Milan, has reportedly ‘spoken to the Portuguese superstar’s representatives’ about joining the Florida franchise ahead of the 2023 season.

Big news from the Big Apple

New York City FC finally seem to have sorted out their long-term home.

According to the New York Times, the Pigeons will build a 25,000-seater stadium in the borough of Queens that is expected to open in 2027.

The ground will be part of a $780m development that also features a hotel and housing.

Criscito calls it a day at Toronto

Domenico Criscito has decided to retire at 35, cutting short his stint at Toronto FC.

The former Genoa and Zenit defender arrived last summer, as one part of a triumvirate of Italian signings along with Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi.

He had signed a deal with the Reds through the end of next season, but Father Time has caught up with 26-times capped former Italy international.

Toronto ready to ‘cash in on Nelson’

Also reportedly heading for the exit door at BMO Field is Jayden Nelson.

A number of sources insist the 20-year-old winger, who just missed out on the Canada squad for the World Cup, is likely to be sold to a European club in January.

LAFC announce roster decisions

With the MLS Cup and Supporters’ Shield safely tucked in the trophy cabinet, Los Angeles have started to look towards next season.

Kellyn Acosta and Maxime Crépeau will stay in Black and Gold after they had their contract options exercised.

Attackers Cal Jennings and Danny Trejo and goalkeeper Tomás Romero have been released, while negotiations continue with a host of other free agents.

O’Hara stuns NWSL with free agency move

Kelley O’Hara made NWSL history today by announcing her move to Gotham FC from the Washington Spirit.

The 34-year-old USWNT international becomes the first free agent to ever opt against re-signing with their former team.

A definite trailblazer!

36 MLS players called up for 2022 World Cup

For a league that’s still growing, 36 players being selected by their national sides to travel to Qatar is not bad going.

It’s still a tall order for any of them to be lifting the famous trophy at the Lusail Stadium on 18 December, though.

🎥 Last-ditch defending

Goals are all fine and well, but some of the most dramatic moments in a game come when the defending team somehow manage to keep the ball out of their net.

Sit back and enjoy some of best goal-line clearances from the MLS season just gone!

We’ll end where we started by checking out David Beckham in action for LA Galaxy in 2007.

The former Real Madrid and Milan midfielder may not have propelled his new side into the play-offs, but they failed in style!
