It has gone relatively quiet on the transfer market front, but there have been some managerial developments to fill the void.

There was recognition to be given after a weekend of Rivalry Week action in the MLS, and David Beckham’s son shows signs of following in the family business…

Donovan among candidates for Earthquakes post

While the impending appointment of Wayne Rooney as the next DC United manager grabbed the headlines over the weekend, he’s not the only former Everton star who is line for a job at a struggling franchise.

Former USA international Landon Donovan, who had two loan spells at Goodison Park during his playing career, is reportedly among the candidates to replace Matías Almeyda (who left in April) at the San Jose Earthquakes.

Bale aiming to become a fixture at LAFC

Gareth Bale has continued to insist that his move to Los Angeles FC is by no means a way of easing himself into retirement.

The winger, who turns 33 this week, told a press conference that he hopes the move to Tinseltown will prolong his career, and maybe even help him lead Wales to the 2024 European Championships.

Chicago keeper Slolina on verge of Chelsea deal

Despite being heavily linked with Real Madrid earlier in the summer, Gabriel Slonina is reportedly on his way Chelsea.

The 18-year-old goalkeeper won’t link up with Christian Pulisic et al immediately, however, as the Blues have seemingly agreed to allow him stay at Chicago Fire on loan for the rest of the year.

Player of the Week

Rivalry Week got off to a remarkable start on Friday as Philadelphia Union set the tone with a thumping 7-0 win over the hapless DC United.

Julián Carranza bagged a hat-trick for the Union, which saw him named MLS Player of the Week.

Team of the Week

His exploits saw Carranza included in the Team of the Week, alongside a trio of goalscoring defenders.

Christian Fuchs converted from the spot to set Charlotte on their way to a 4-1 win over Nashville, while Houston Dyano’s Teenage Hadebe and Lalas Abubakar of Colorado Rapids both netted late on to rescue points against Dallas and Real Salt Lake respectively.

Bend it like…

Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham was famous for his dead-ball expertise during a glittering playing career.

He appears to have passed that ability on to 19-year-old son Romeo judging by this superb effort in a MLS Next Pro clash against Orlando City.

Uncanny!

USWNT leave it late against Mexico

The USWNT were given an unexpectedly difficult game by Mexico in the Concacaf W Championship on Monday night.

Even following the 73rd-minute dismissal of Lizbeth Ovalle, the Mexicans still looked like they would manage to frustrate the Stars and Stripes.

But Kristie Mewis broke La Tri hearts with an 89th-minute winner that ensured the Yanks progressed from Group A with a 100% record heading into their semi-final date with Costa Rica.

Alejandro Moreno is a recognisable face from his punditry gig on ESPN, but back in the day he was a fox in the box for a number of MLS sides.

The former Venezuela international starred for Philadelphia Union in their debut season in 2010, which meant he got to wear this golden beauty.
