There’s just enough time to draw breath after the midweek MLS action has ended and before the weekend fare kicks off.

With the European transfer window now closed, why not catch up on all the latest from this side of the pond…

Individual brilliance

It may not have been enough to earn Austin a point, but Sebastián Driussi’s goal in their 2-1 loss to Portland on Wednesday saw him stay top of the MLS scoring charts.

It was also the 11th straight game that he either netted or set a goal up.

Los Verdes are all but assured of a place in the play-offs and their fans will be hoping the Argentine star brings this form into the post-season.

Player of the Week

Speaking of personal achievement, it was yet another standout performance in a brilliant season for Hany Mukhtar as his hat-trick helped Nashville to a 4-1 win over Colorado.

Not only did it put him top of the goal and assists charts with 40 direct involvements this term (19 goals and 11 assists), but it also saw the Tennessee move climb to fifth in the Western Conference.

The German playmaker is a model of consistency!

Team of the Week

Inevitably, Mukhtar also makes the Team of the Week for his exploits and he is named in the engine room in a 3-4-3 formation alongside LA Galaxy’s Riqui Puig.

The former Barcelona man, of course, opened his MLS scoring account with an absolute belter to earn his side a late point at Toronto.

Any excuse to look at it again!

All apologies

One player who was nowhere near any awards last weekend was Vancouver Whitecaps striker Lucas Cavallini.

The Canada international was guilty of purposely stepping on the head of Nashville’s Alex Muyl as the Caps fell to a 3-0 home defeat.

He was sent off for the offence, and has now issued an apology for the incident.

If reports are to be believed, however, Cavallini is likely to receive a four-game ban for his unseemly behaviour.

Benfica bag Brooks

As aforementioned, it was a frenetic day of transfer activity over in Europe as the summer transfer window there slammed shut.

Sergiño Dest moving from Barcelona to Milan on loan caught the eye, but arguablly the most interesting deal from an American viewpoint was Benfica’s acquisition of John Brooks.

Without a club since leaving Bundesliga side Wolfsburg at the end of last season, the 29-year-old centre-back will no doubt hope the move to Portugal will boost his chances of forcing his way back into the USMNT squad ahead of the World Cup in Qatar.

Making Waves

San Diego Wave have announced a 32,000 sell-out for their upcoming home clash with Angel City.

The current NWSL attendance record is 25,218 for the North Carolina Courage v Portland Thorns game at Providence Park in 2019.

That figure is about to get submerged!
