Star Turns: Seven Premier League players who shone bright this weekend | OneFootball

The latest round of Premier League action gave us some entertaining contests with goals aplenty across the division, the likes of Everton, Leeds, Tottenham and Leicester emerging with three points from high-scoring clashes.

Elsewhere, Crystal Palace produced the shock of the weekend by winning at Manchester United, whilst champions Liverpool gave big-spending Chelsea a reality check by securing three points at Stamford Bridge.

Following the action we’ve decided to look at some of the best players from the Premier League‘s weekend, here are seven players who shone bright in the latest round of fixtures:

Wilfried Zaha

Crystal Palace made it back-to-back wins to open the new season with a shock victory at Old Trafford, their impressive result secured following a fine performance from former Red Devils forward Wilfried Zaha.

The Ivory Coast international failed to make the grade after becoming Sir Alex Ferguson’s final signing as Manchester United manager, but back at former side Palace has flourished into an exciting if inconsistent talent.

Despite pushing for a move away from Selhurst Park Zaha has begun the new season in fine fashion and followed an opening day winner against Southampton with a brace against United, his first coming after taking responsibility to slam home a retaken penalty after Jordan Ayew had seen the initial effort saved by David de Gea.

The 27-year-old then demonstrated his strength and skill by holding off a feeble challenge from Victor Lindelof to lash home a second and put the result beyond doubt, Zaha producing an excellent all-round display as captain of Roy Hodgson’s side.

Tariq Lamptey

Tariq Lamptey looks like the latest prospect in a long line of talented English right-backs, the teenager having enjoyed a hugely impressive start to the season at Brighton.

Lamptey was excellent in the Seagulls’ season opener against former side Chelsea before starring during Brighton’s impressive 3-0 win over Newcastle on Sunday, marauding forward down the right flank and winning an early penalty for Neil Maupay to convert before playing his part in the forward’s second just minutes later.

The 19-year-old was a threat in attack all afternoon in addition to demonstrating his lightning recovery pace defensively, the youngster reaping the rewards of a brave decision to leave Chelsea in search of regular first-team football in January.

Lamptey has swiftly shown he is more than ready to feature at Premier League level and Brighton look to have secured the services of a rough diamond for a bargain fee of just £4m.

Harry Kane

Harry Kane may be viewed as Tottenham’s chief goal threat but the England captain certainly has more strings to his bow, as evidenced by a brilliant creative display as the north London side registered their first win of the season at Southampton.

Kane finished the clash with an incredible four assists as Spurs won 5-2 at St Mary’s, becoming the first English player to achieve the feat in a single fixture and just the sixth in the history of the Premier League.

Somewhat incredibly, each of Kane’s assists were to forward partner Son Heung-Min, the first time a player had assisted the same teammate four times in a single Premier League clash.

It was a masterful display from the 27-year-old who also got himself on the scoresheet as Spurs bounced back from a disappointing opening day defeat to Everton, their season and talisman now up and running for the campaign as they bid to progress under the guidance of Jose Mourinho.

Son Heung-Min

Jose Mourinho may have lauded Kane as his Man of the Match for a selfless display at Southampton, but there is no disputing Son Heung-Min’s role in Spurs’ first win of the season following a clinical four-goal haul from the South Korean.

The forward was electric as he repeatedly capitalised on a high Southampton defensive line, racing clear following some brilliant passes from forward partner Kane before finishing nervelessly past Alex McCarthy.

Son has a fair claim to being Spurs’ most important player with his industrious and exciting style offering a new dimension in attack, the club’s best play arguably coming when centre-forward Kane drops deeper and has runners racing ahead.

Son and Kane have now combined for more goals than any other Premier League pairing since the former’s arrival at Spurs five years ago, whilst the club’s fans will now surely be salivating at the prospect of the duo working alongside marquee arrival Gareth Bale in attack.

Sadio Mane

Much has been made about who the most vital component of Liverpool’s title-winning side is and few have as strong a case as Sadio Mane, the Senegal international providing another reminder of his quality in the Reds’ 2-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Mane scored both goals to seal a vital three points for Jurgen Klopp’s side against the west London outfit, netting a superb headed opener before being rewarded for his industrious pressing play by forcing a howler from Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The 28-year-old was also pivotal in the sending off of Andreas Christensen in arguably the game’s turning point, racing onto Jordan Henderson’s pass before being hauled to the ground by the Danish defender.

Mane’s brace saw him overhaul Luis Suarez and enter the all-time top 20 leading scorers for Liverpool, whilst he also levelled Fernando Torres as the club’s sixth-highest Premier League goalscorer on 65 goals.

So often the player who delivers for Liverpool when it matters most, Mane ranks amongst the most irreplaceable talents in the Premier League at present.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin

The joint-leading scorer in the Premier League after two fixtures, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Everton have enjoyed a superb start to the campaign.

Calvert-Lewin headed home the only goal of the game as the Toffees beat Tottenham on the opening day, before hitting a clinical hat-trick as Carlo Ancelotti’s side thrashed 10-man West Brom at Goodison Park.

The forward has improved tremendously since Ancelotti’s arrival on Merseyside with the Italian a huge fan of the robust star, with Calvert-Lewin’s increased goal threat making him a formidable threat in a new-look Everton side.

Goals had been a major question mark against the young forward but he has begun brilliantly this term, providing a physical focal point alongside the irresistible Richarlison and silky skills of James Rodriguez.

Each of Calvert-Lewin’s goals came around the six-yard box and those predatory instincts are an encouraging sign for a player who is hoping to move himself into England contention.

Helder Costa

Leeds secured their first win in the Premier League for 16 years courtesy of a 4-3 thriller against fellow promoted outfit Fulham, with Marcelo Bielsa’s side emerging as a neutral’s favourite following two seven-goal encounters in their opening two fixtures.

Key to their success against the west London outfit this weekend was the performance of winger Helder Costa, who produced one of his finest displays in a Leeds shirt at Elland Road.

The winger lashed home the game’s opening goal with a fierce drive after just four minutes, before putting Leeds in complete control with a stunning second, firing home Patrick Bamford’s cross after finding himself unmarked in the penalty area.

Costa took a while to settle in Yorkshire but is now beginning to demonstrate his talents on a regular basis, though the Portuguese attacker will hope his side can iron out their defensive issues as they bid to avoid an instant return to the second tier.
