Manchester United have been dealt a double blow with the news that star pair Alessia Russo and Ona Battle will be leaving the club once their contracts expire at the end of this month.
Russo confirmed the news of her departure with a heartfelt video posted on social media.
The Athletic have reported that while contract talks took place between Russo and the club, no agreement was reached over a new deal, meaning the England international will move on, likely to Arsenal, who made a world-record £500,000 bid for the 24-year-old in January.
Russo scored 10 goals in the Women’s Super League last season, helping United to a second-placed finish, their best to date.
The Athletic add that Battle will follow Russo in departing, with the fullback expected to move to Champions League winners Barcelona, where she started off her career as a youth player.
The Spanish fullback was a key player for United last season, with a goal and nine assists from 19 league games.
It is a serious setback as the club get set for their first season in the Champions League.
