Standard Liege captain Zinho Vanheusden has revealed he is still targeting a return to Inter one day.

The Belgian international defender is a product of the Nerazzurri’s youth academy but re-joined his boyhood club on a permanent deal in the summer of 2019.

Inter still have an option to re-sign the 21-year-old this summer and it seems Vanheusden has not lost hope of teaming up with compatriot Romelu Lukaku at San Siro.

“The goal is to go back there,” Vanheusden explained with Belgian broadcaster RTBF.

“Inter are a very important club who helped me develop as a player.

“Between the ages of 15 and 18 I was there and I learned a lot as a defender.

“Romelu Lukaku is at the Nerazzurri and is happy, I think he’s waiting for me there.”

Vanheusden’s 2020-21 season was cut short by a nasty injury a few months ago and the youngster spoke on how he is doing with his recovery.

“I’m fine, I’m a positive guy even though there are difficult days,” he admitted.

“I miss the pressure of being on the pitch, the fans and everything about football.”

Vanheusden made his debut with Belgium’s senior team before picking up his injury, but the centre-back insisted he was not thinking about a possible inclusion in the squad for this summer’s European Championships.

“Belgium coach Roberto Martinez called me like he has after every injury,” he revealed.

“He told me I would be back, that I shouldn’t be discouraged, that I was strong.

“The door remains open for me, even if for the moment I am not thinking about the Euros.

“I am thinking about my knee getting back to 100%.

“I do not want to have more pain.

“We will see what the pitch says because that is where the truth lies.”

Vanheusden has made 13 appearances in all competitions for Standard Liege this season, with Mbaye Leye’s side currently sixth in the Jupiler Pro League after 26 games.
