Standard Liege and Anderlecht have always had a tense relationship. Ahead of their Croky Cup clash, the fans of Standard have revealed that they managed to get their hands on part of the tifo that Anderlecht’s supporters were planning to unveil at tonight’s game. Tifo’s are, like in many parts of Europe, a major part of fan culture in Belgium, and this act by the ultras of Standard will certainly have angered those of the Mauves.

Standard fans themselves were behind one of the most infamous tifo displays in Belgian history. When former Standard midfielder Steven Defour returned to Liege with Anderlecht in 2015, the home fans unveiled a banner which said ‘Red or Dead’, with a masked man holding a machete in one hand and the head of Steven Defour in another.

Belgian police are already anticipating clashes between the fans tonight, and will certainly have been dismayed to hear about the tifo theft. It is unlikely that Anderlecht’s ultras will allow this act to go without a response.
