Standard Liege have announced the signing of Kamal Sowah on loan from Club Brugge. The Ghanaian international will link up with former Club Brugge head coach Carl Hoefkens, who arguably got the best out of the former OH Leuven man during his time in Brugge. The 23-year-old has not seen any game time under Rony Deila and with the AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire looming, he needed to leave in order to stake a claim to a place in Chris Hughton’s side.
Former Leicester City prospect Sowah joined OH Leuven on loan between 2018 and 2021, making 72 appearances and scoring 13 times. He was part of the side that won promotion to the Belgian Pro League. Club Brugge then signed him for a few million euros in 2021, however he struggled in his first season. For the second half of the 2021/2022 season he was loaned to AZ Alkmaar, where he played 11 times but failed to score. Since returning to Club Brugge, he has played 36 games and scored twice. Both of these goals came during the sides historic Champions League run, where Sowah played his best football.
Standard are currently winless in the league, and fans will hope that Hoefkens can once again get the best out of the 23-year-old. The side do have a purchase option included in the loan.
