There was little excitement in Liege following the clash between Standard and Mechelen. Neither side could break the deadlock and it felt almost a certainty that the game would end in a 0-0 draw. The result means that, despite a summer of uncertainty, Standard have managed to start the Pro League campaign unbeaten. As a side, they will certainly be happy to have avoided defeat after games against Genk, Club Brugge and Mechelen.
Yet both sides will be concerned at the lack of threat they had during the game. Neither side got over 1 for xG, with Standard finishing the 90 minutes with the higher number of 0.87. The home side had 17 but only four were on target. The closest Mechelen could get was shots from distance, forcing young goalkeeper Matthieu Epolo into just two saves.
Up next for Standard will be a trip to Kortrijk, while Mechelen have a home tie with Anderlecht.
