As reported by A Bola, World Cup authorities are considering moving one of the stadiums used for games at the World Cup in Qatar to South America ahead of the 2030 tournament where it could host further games.

The only stadium without pitch-side air conditioning used at this World Cup, Stadium 974 in Doha, named after the city’s area code in which the ground is located, has hosted several games at this winter’s competition despite being a temporary structure made from shipping containers. The stadium was designed to be dismantled after the tournament, given the lack of demand for major stadia in the small Middle Eastern country, but it could yet find a home on the other side of the world.

With the 2026 World Cup being hosted in North America, the location of the 2030 tournament is yet to be decided. However, South American confederation, CONMEBOL, are pushing for the tournament’s centenary to be held in Uruguay (who hosted the first edition in 1930), Argentina, Chile and Paraguay. If that does happen, Uruguayan organisers are said to be interested in rebuilding Stadium 974 in the country for the competition in eight years’ time.
