Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Tottenham will prioritise strengthening their midfield in future transfer windows.

Who did Tottenham sign this summer?

Spurs made five signings in the recent transfer window, but they largely focused on improving other areas of their team. They brought in defenders Cristian Romero and Emerson Royal, added another goalkeeper to their ranks in Pierluigi Gollini, and tempted Bryan Gil away from Sevilla. The north London club did bring in one midfielder, Pape Sarr, but he is only 18 and is regarded as a player for the future.

Now, it seems that Tottenham want to look at signing midfielders who can make an impact straight away.

What did Romano say about Tottenham's transfer priorities?

Romano has outlined how Tottenham have turned their attention to bolstering their options in the middle of the park, claiming that Fabio Paratici and Steve Hitchen are already trying to identify targets they can approach either in January or next summer.

He confirmed on The Here We Go Podcast“They will focus on midfield. I don’t know if it will be January or the summer but they will focus on midfield. The next position that Tottenham want to improve is the midfield. Let’s see what happens with Ndombele, if they will find a solution, but they need to improve the midfield, and this is what they want to do. Paratici and Hitchen will work on it in the coming months.”

How big an issue is Tottenham's current midfield?

Spurs' midfield has been a major cause for concern in the opening weeks of the season. There has been a severe lack of creativity from these positions so far, with Tottenham only managing to score three goals in their first five league games. It must be worrying for Nuno Espirito Santo that his team have not scored a goal from open play in the top-flight since their win against Manchester City, which came over a month ago.

Tottenham did manage to win their first three Premier League matches under Nuno, though, keeping three clean sheets in the process as they appeared to be a side that were difficult to break down.

Did Tottenham Hotspur sign Moussa Sissoko on transfer deadline day in 2016?

Yes No

However, they have been carved open at will in their last two fixtures against Crystal Palace and Chelsea, suffering back-to-back 3-0 losses. In these games, their midfield has offered the team's defence very little protection.

Right now, Spurs' midfield is not performing effectively in attack or defence, and that will need to be addressed in the next two transfer windows if they are to have any chance of moving higher up the table.
