Tottenham Hotspur are considering Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim as an alternative to Julian Nagelsmann to become the club’s next manager.

Amorim is understood to be interested in the role and has forged a reputation as one of Europe’s best young coaches in Portugal.

He led Sporting to a first league title in 19 years during the 2020/21 campaign and has ensured the side have remained competitive in Europe – eliminating Arsenal from this season’s Europa League – despite the sales of key figures in Lisbon. Amorim’s side also beat Spurs in this season’s Champions League group stage.

The 38-year-old signed a new deal at Sporting in November, but his contract contains a release clause of €20m (£17.6m) for foreign clubs.

Nagelsmann remains the first choice of the Spurs board, but the north Londoners face a challenge to convince the German to take charge. The 35-year-old turned down an approach from Chelsea after talks with the club last month.

Nagelsmann has been without a club since leaving Bayern Munich last month and is keen to ensure his next club is the right project.

According to the Times, Nagelsmann would command a salary similar to the £15m that Antonio Conte was paid before his exit and would want clarity on the club’s sporting director situation. He has worked under a sporting director at each of his previous clubs and Spurs saw Fabio Paratici resign from the role last month.
