Tottenham Hotspur’s attacking midfielder Zhang Linyan has been recalled from her loan spell by parent club Wuhan Jianghan University ahead of schedule.

The Lilywhites announced the news via a post on their official club website this morning.

Chinese international Zhang joined Spurs in September. The player has gone on to make three appearances for the North Londoners in the Barclays Women’s Super League but she has struggled for minutes. Just one of those appearances has come in the form of a start while she was named amongst the substitutes for seven league matches.

Zhang arrived at Spurs with a solid CV. The midfielder started out in her native China with Beijing BG Pheonix before representing Guangzhou and Wuhan Jianghan University. Zhang had also briefly played in Switzerland with Grasshopper Club.

At international level, Zhang has 25 senior caps for China and was a member of the team that won the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in 2022.

The player will now return to China hoping to get a more regular run of games after having the benefit of a good learning experience playing her football in Europe.

Spurs head coach Robert Vilahamn has already strengthened some areas of his squad in this month’s transfer window. It is unknown if another attacking midfielder will now be on his wanted list.
