Spurs make big offer to player with expiring contract

According to Spanish media publication Diario Sport, Tottenham Hotspur have made a “large financial offer” to Lille striker Jonathan David, and want to agree a pre-contract with the 24-year old in January, ahead of him becoming a free agent in the summer of 2025. They say that Spurs are “willing to wait, but not for long”.

Spurs linked to striker with a contract expiring next summer

The club have been constantly linked to the forward since the summer, as well as club team mate and home grown midfielder Angel Gomes, who is also out of contract. Reports surfaced back in October that David was not going to sign a new contract with the French side, and thus will become available on a free transfer in the summer – barring anything that happens in the January transfer window.

So far in Ligue 1 this season, the Canadian international has scored 11 goals in 14 games – 1089 minutes – albeit five of those have been penalties, and six from open play. Still, penalties are part of the game, and it doesn’t feel like Spurs have many clear options from the spot, barring the skipper.

In the UEFA Champions League, David has scored four goals in 359 minutes, which equates to as many games. He scored the winner against Real Madrid, before scoring a brace in just 25 minutes against Atletico Madrid.

His goals in the competition have hugely contributed to Lille currently sitting in 12th place in the league phase, ahead of the aforementioned Madrid sides, Bayern Munich, Manchester City and other big name teams.

One thing to caveat with all of this; whilst the documents would say it is a free transfer, there really is no such thing in football. The report mentions that it is a large financial offer being made, as well as agent fees and a signing on fee. Often when players sign for clubs on a “free transfer”, the player and agent make huge demands, knowing that the club is saving money on a fee.

Still, there is no doubt that David is a good player, with a lot of qualities that would suit playing in an Ange Postecoglu side. It is clear that Spurs can no longer rely on Richarlison, and they desperately need to ease the burden on Dominic Solanke, who is being ran into the ground at the moment. Let’s wait and see how this one develops over the coming months.
