On Tuesday evening, although there were no Championship games, there was a full slate in League One and Two, meaning games for a number of Tottenham Hotspur loanees. Let’s take a look and see how everyone got on.
In the third tier, Josh Keeley and Jamie Donley both started in the same league game for the first time, as their Leyton Orient side hosted Bristol Rovers. We had seen Donley be the sacrificed loanee from a number of match day squads in recent weeks, but he was named in the starting XI for this one – and played the whole 90 minutes in the number ten role.
As for Keeley, he built on his goal against Oldham Athletic in the FA Cup at the weekend, with a clean sheet in this one, with Orient cruising to a 3-0 win. After the most dramatic afternoon of his career on Saturday, this was perhaps the quietest, with Rovers having zero shots on target all game, and just three attempts of any note.
This win has taken Orient back out of the relegation zone, and above Northampton Town, who had sat above them. They are still just 20th, with 18 points from 17 games, but the table is beginning to look healthier, with the O’s three points behind tonight’s visitors, who sit in 15th, with a game in hand. There is also a five point gap on Cambridge in 22nd place.
Elsewhere, Matthew Craig was yet again named amongst the substitutes for Barnsley’s trip to Wrexham. For the fifth game in a row, the midfielder did not make it off the bench, as The Tykes fell to a stoppage time winner from their hosts. Spurs are surely conscious of this situation, and will be seriously considering a recall in January – should things not improve as soon as possible.
This defeat leaves Barnsley in 8th place in League One, two places off the play-off positions, with 27 points from their 18 games so far.
Next up for Orient is a trip to Wigan Athletic on Saturday, with a 12:30 GMT kick off there. As for Barnsley, they host Birmingham City on the same day, with a 15:00 GMT kick off for that one.
Finally, in League Two, George Abbott, along with a number of other players, missed Notts County’s trip to Walsall with an injury. In their absence, Stuart Maynard’s side fell to a 3-2 defeat, leaving them in 6th place in League Two, with 28 points from 18 games.
Next up for Notts is a home against Colchester United this Saturday, with a 12:30 GMT kick off.
