The 30-year-old netted an equaliser two minutes from time as the Commonwealth Bank Matildas recorded an impressive draw with the world champions in an international friendly.
It was a sweet moment for Simon who spurned a big chance against the same opponents in a 3-0 international friendly defeat in Sydney on Saturday. When speaking after the match in Newcastle, Simon said that she was pleased to make amends for that miss.
“It was important for me to bounce back following my shocking miss the other day,” she said. “For me, it was playing on my mind, I wanted to come into this game and get a goal and help the team out in anyway that I could.
“As a team, it was just really important that we got something out of this game as our final match of 2021 and leading into the Asian Cup next year.”
Reflecting on Australia’s performances over the two games, Simon went on to say that the Commonwealth Bank Matildas have made some progress going into a busy period for the team.
She added “Every opportunity that we have to come together as a team, we cannot take for granted. There are five or six windows that we have to come in and we have to really switch on and work towards being the best that we can be.
“With major tournaments like the Asian Cup, Olympic Games and a home World Cup coming up, we can’t waste a minute and we can’t waste a camp. I really think that we have made some progress in this camp even from the first game to the second game, that’s the mindset that we have every time that we come into the game.”
Simon will now return to her club as they prepare for the trip to Aston Villa in 10 days’ time.
