Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Morgan Gibbs-White now looks to be over, at least for this summer, with the Nottingham Forest midfielder having signed a new contract. According to GiveMeSport via Fabrizio Romano, Spurs are “working on” an alternative but have yet to settle on a definitive target.

There had been optimism around a potential deal for Gibbs-White earlier in the window, particularly as Spurs sought to add creativity behind the forward line. That plan now requires adjustment, and Spurs appear to be recalibrating their midfield shortlist in response.
Romano stated, “They’re working on it [alternative targets for Gibbs-White]. As soon as I know, I will tell you.” While names remain unconfirmed, reports have pointed to several players under consideration.
James McAtee of Manchester City is one potential option. The 21-year-old has been monitored by multiple clubs and could be available if City decide to sanction a loan or permanent move.

RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons is another name linked, though the financial and structural complexity of such a transfer would be considerable.

Tottenham have also reportedly discussed Kobbie Mainoo. While Manchester United have shown no signs of allowing the 19-year-old to leave, Spurs have “reached out to try and discover the potential conditions of a deal,” according to GiveMeSport sources.

Mainoo’s name highlights the ambition behind Tottenham’s efforts, but also the difficulty of securing elite talent without Champions League leverage.
The end of the Gibbs-White pursuit will be frustrating but not surprising for Spurs fans. Once the new Forest contract was signed, the writing was on the wall. What matters now is how quickly they pivot, and who they target.
James McAtee has promise, but feels like a long-term project rather than someone who can dictate tempo and link midfield to attack immediately. If Spurs are serious about challenging this season, they need players ready to contribute now.
The Xavi Simons link is the most exciting. His ability to operate in tight spaces, carry the ball and unlock defences is exactly what they lack. But RB Leipzig’s position will not make it simple, and unless they’re ready to pay a premium, that deal feels distant.
Mainoo is clearly a stretch. United will not let him go unless the terms are outrageous, or unless the player forces a move, which seems unlikely. But fair play to the club for showing ambition and testing the water.
Ultimately, the summer cannot stall here. Tottenham need depth and invention in midfield. If Gibbs-White is off the table, then Spurs must move fast, because the need is growing, and the season won’t wait.
