Tottenham Hotspur have said the club are ‘disgusted’ by the racist abuse Spurs striker Mathys Tel received following the club’s UEFA Super Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
Tel missed his penalty in the club’s shootout defeat to PSG, as Thomas Frank’s side missed out on the trophy.
The Frenchman was targeted online following the defeat and Spurs have issued a statement to outline their disgust. In the statement, Spurs branded the abusers ‘nothing but cowards’.
“We are disgusted at the racial abuse that Mathys Tel has received on social media following last night’s UEFA Super Cup defeat,” the statement read.
“Mathys showed bravery and courage to step forward and take a penalty, yet those who abuse him are nothing but cowards – hiding behind anonymous usernames and profiles to spout their abhorrent views.
“We will work with the authorities and social media platforms to take the strongest possible action against any individual we are able to identify.
“We stand with you, Mathys.”
