This compiles a miserable week for the club, after the news that Cristian Romero is set to be unavailable for the next six weeks, having also picked up an injury in the defeat to Chelsea last weekend.
Furthermore, as it stands, we do not know when Ben Davies is going to be back. It is looking like we are going to see a central defensive duo of Radu Dragusin and Archie Gray.
So, you have a partnership of a defender who has looked out of sorts in most games he has played this season, and an 18 year old midfielder. Absolutely far from ideal, in any circumstances.
Based on the timeline provided, van de Ven is set to miss games against; Rangers away (Europa League), Southampton away, Manchester United at home (Carabao Cup), and Liverpool at home.
In addition, the defender could also miss games against Nottingham Forest away and Wolverhampton Wanderers at home. Those two games are more than two weeks away, but not quite three weeks away.
Some fans have suggested playing academy defender Alfie Dorrington— who has missed quite a few games of his own through injury (so he’ll fit right in), but has played a few games again recently, and could be an option over the next few weeks.
Should Ange opt with Gray to partner Dragusin, there would be quite the domino effect. For starters, it means that the clearly shattered and out of form Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie have to be further ran into the ground.
Furthermore, it means there are even fewer options in midfield. That shouldn’t be much of an issue against Rangers, but on Sunday, Spurs will be without both Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma. Who is going to be tasked with holding it down for that game?
There has to be a consideration of recalling Ashley Phillips from his loan at Championship side Stoke City next month. The defender has been getting consistent game time under his belt, and has generally impressed so far.
Whilst the club will ideally make transfer acquisitions in January, they need all the help they can get, and recalling Phillips feels like a smart thing to do, at this current moment in time.
