Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has said he would be interested in a future transfer to Spain.

Spurs have endured a difficult campaign and lost their 18th game of the Premier League season at home to Nottingham Forest on Monday night.

The North Londoners are 16th in the table and facing the prospect of a season without European football – unless the club win the Europa League this season.

Ange Postecoglou’s men are into the semi-finals and will face Bodo/Glimt in the last four. Either Athletic Bilbao or Manchester United await in the final.

Romero has said his focus is on winning that competition. However, he hinted that he will assess his future at the end of the campaign. The Argentina international has been named as a potential transfer target for Atletico Madrid.

Atleti manager Diego Simeone is understood to be a big admirer of his compatriot, who has been a crucial part of Argentina’s recent success. Romero was named in the Team of the Tournament as Argentina won the Copa America in 2021 and 2024, in addition to forming part of La Albiceleste’s World Cup-winning side in 2022.

Atletico are seeking to reinforce their backline this summer with a statement signing. Speaking to Los Edul, Romero opened up on his interest in playing in La Liga, as he looks to experience each of Europe’s major leagues.

“We’re in the Europa League semi-finals, I want to finish the season on a high note. After that, we’ll see. My focus is always on growing and looking for new places to continue developing,” Romero said.

“A league I would like to play in would be Spain to compete in all the major leagues.”
