Robert Vilahamn was pleased for his side’s team performance to see off Everton to claim an important 2-1 win in the Barclays Women’s Super League on Sunday afternoon.

Captain Bethany England fired us ahead midway through the first half, reacting quickest from Courtney Brosnan’s save to deny Clare Hunt to fire home from close-range, but Sara Holmgaard cancelled out her opener with a thunderous strike into the top right corner in the final five minutes of the first half.

That didn’t dampen our spirits, as our number nine reinstated our lead just three minutes after the break, converting from the penalty spot after Martha Thomas was fouled, taking her tally to four goals in the league this season and just four away from becoming the WSL’s all-time top goalscorer.

Everton continued to push for an equaliser as the clock ticked towards the final whistle, but we stood strong defensively to secure a much-needed three points in the league, seeing us leapfrog Liverpool into sixth-place in the table.

Speaking to SPURSPLAY after the game, Robert said: “Three points for us is really important but, to be honest, I think we actually had a really good performance.

“The first 25 minutes was brilliant football in the conditions we faced, we scored a nice goal and then we created chances, obviously we needed to be sharper in that mistake for their goal and, the second half was a little bit difficult because of the wind, but we managed to find a few good attacks as well.

“Finding a way to win, Eleanor [Heeps] getting her first game in the league as well and, if you look at it, it’s overall a good performance.”

Asked about Bethany’s brace to inspire us to a win, he added: “For Bethany, with the history she has of scoring goals, but what she means for us in her leadership, taking those opportunities this afternoon.

“But, still, we need to improve how we finish because we had so many chances where we had our efforts blocked or the goalkeeper made some great saves, but we should kill this game off and play some more attacking football. On the other hand, it was a tough game with the conditions, so I’m very pleased Bethany scored those two goals.”

The victory over Everton kicks start a busy final week of the calendar year, with trips to Crystal Palace in the Women’s League Cup and Brighton & Hove Albion in the WSL over the next seven days, and Robert is hoping to build on the confidence from previous two games.

“If you see the last two games, two good wins, much better press, how we are more brave in the build-up, we can go into the next two games with some good self-confidence,” he said.

“Crystal Palace is a cup game where we have a good opportunity to progress to the quarter-final if we have a good game there and then we have Brighton away, they have had a great season so far, but we can go into that to make sure we compete.”
