Sporting Lisbon defender Ivan Fresneda has said teammate Viktor Gyokeres is ‘from another world’ and believes there are few forwards with his quality.
Gyokeres has been a revelation since signing for Sporting from Coventry City in 2023. The Swedish striker has surpassed 40 goals in successive campaigns and was named Primeira Liga Player of the Year during Sporting’s title success last season.
The 26-year-old’s prolific form has placed him on the wish list of top teams across Europe. Several of the Premier League’s leading sides are considering a summer approach for Gyokeres. He is understood to be valued in excess of £60m at the Estádio José Alvalade.
Fresneda is unsurprised to see Europe’s elite chasing a deal, having witnessed first hand the player’s qualities.
Speaking in an interview with Flashscore, he said Gyokeres’ unrelenting levels do not drop even in training and called the Swede ‘a star from another world’.
“Always, always. Even now, when with the national teams we’re training four or five first-team players and he always needs more. He always needs to score goals, he gets frustrated if he doesn’t. He’s a machine in games, in training, in life. He’s a star from another world.
He’s a very complete player because he’s physically strong, he’s fast, he’s powerful, he’s got a shot, but that’s not all. The quality he has, his height, his physical strength. You try to find a player like that and in today’s football, I don’t see many like him, who are so physically strong and then have quality.”
Asked if he was surprised by the list of clubs reportedly chasing a deal for the striker, the Spaniard added: “Not at all, no. He’s always the same. What people see in the game is what we see in training. A lot of people have talked about him and nothing changes, he’s the same every day.”
