Sporting Lisbon president Frederico Varandas has indicated that reported Manchester United striker target Viktor Gyokeres will be allowed to leave if his release clause is triggered.
Gyokeres has been mentioned to be a player United are interested in and these links have only intensified following the club’s appointment of Ruben Amorim as head coach.
Under Amorim, Gyokeres has exploded, cementing his reputation as one of the deadliest and most lethal finishers in Europe.
So far this term, the Sweden international has plundered a mind-boggling 16 goals and one assist in 11 Liga Portugal appearances.
Across all competitions, he has managed 23 goals and four assists. This tally includes a sensational hat trick against Manchester City last week.
United are not the only party believed to be keen on landing Gyokeres. He’s also on the radar of outfits like Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City.
A previous report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that the 26-year-old can be obtained for a £63 million sum, which is £20 million less than the value of his release clause.
It’s understood that Gyokeres has a gentleman’s agreement in place with Sporting for him to leave if a big club were to swoop in for him.
This arrangement has now seemingly been confirmed by Sporting president Varandas.
Varandas said [via Fabrizio Romano on X], “I can’t promise anything.”
“If a club arrives and pays the release clause, if he wants to go… he will go.”
“But I do NOT think this will happen in January.”
United’s struggles in front of goal are well-known, with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee proving to be uninspiring. Gyokeres could potentially be a solution in this regard and it helps that he understands and functions well in an Amorim system.
