Sporting Gijón may be about to solve a problem for América after they declared interest in winger Juan Otero.
The Colombian has been a disappointment since arriving from Santos Laguna.
More importantly, he is taking up one of the Azulcrema’s foreign player spots and they need to offload Otero before they can register new signing Jonathan Rodríguez.
Gijón have recently been taken over by the Orlegi Group, with Alejandro Irarragorri installed as club president.
The 51-year-old Mexican businessman was interviewed by MARCA about his plans for the Segunda División side when the potential signing of Otero was brought up.
“It is not my turn to talk about sports issues. Is it a possibility? Surely, yes,” Irarragorri said.
América will hope that the Spanish side follow through on their interest quickly, and also that they are able to recoup much of the $4.4m they shelled out for the player just six months ago.
It is unlikely any deal will be agreed before Saturday’s Apertura opener at home to defending champions Atlas, a club coincidentally also controlled by the Orlegi Group.
