The return of forward Joquin Correa from a loan at Marseille could be a “spanner in the works” for Inter Milan’s summer transfer plans.

This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

Marseille will not be in next season’s edition of the Champions League.

The French side will not qualify via Ligue 1, where their form has been erratic this season. And they also will not be winning the Europa League.

The Europa League had represented a potential pathway into Europe’s top club competition for Marseille, who were in the semifinals.

However, after a promising 1-1 draw against Atalanta in the first leg, La Dea beat the French team 3-0 in the second leg on Thursday.

If there is a “silver lining” for Marseille failing to qualify for the Champions League, it is that they will not have to sign forward Correa on a permanent basis.

The Argentine has spent this season on loan with the Ligue 1 club from Inter.

Correa joined Marseille on a season-long loan deal last summer.

That was a paid loan deal with a €2 million initial fee. The deal also includes a purchase option worth around €10 million.

That option would have become a mandatory obligation in the event of Marseille’s qualification for next season’s Champions League.

However, that has not proven to be the case.

And under no obligation to sign Correa permanently, there is certainly no chance of Marseille doing so now.

Correa has barely featured for Marseille this season. And when he has, the former Lazio, Sevilla, and Sampdoria forward has hardly contributed.

There have been no goals or assists from Correa for Marseille this season.

If anything, the 29-year-old’s form this campaign has been even worse than in his two seasons at Inter.

As such, Marseille will certainly be happy to see Correa return to Inter. Less so the Nerazzurri, however.

The €10 million fee from Correa’s permanent sale would have certainly been useful for Inter in the summer transfer window.

But without that windfall, Inter will be left trying to sort out Correa’s future.

And the margins will be a bit thinner as far as the Nerazzurri’s pursuit of another attacking signing this summer.

On the contrary, in fact, Correa could even stay at Inter for next season.
