Transfer News: Roberto Martinez interested in Tottenham Hotspur job as club makes contact with him

The Football Insider claims that Roberto Martinez is making a ‘huge play’ to take over as the new manager of Tottenham Hotspur. The club has made contact with him.

Martinez was on the initial list of managers, alongside Brendan Rodgers and Julian Nagelsmann, eyed to replace the outgoing Jose Mourinho in April. But the latter has signed a contract with Bayern Munich while the cost and difficulty of bringing Rodgers to N17 is deemed to be a hurdle. (h/t Football Insider)

Martinez has a pretty impressive CV. He has made a significant reputation for himself in England during his stints at Wigan Athletic, Everton, and Swansea City. He took over the Belgian national team in 2016 and has since done a great job there.

The Spaniard led the Belgian side to their best-ever World Cup finish in the 2018 FIFA World Cup when they beat England in the 3rd-place play-off. And now, it looks like he could be on his way back to England.

Martinez back to England

The report mentions that Martinez is eager to link up with Tottenham immediately after the Euros. The 47-year-old is highly interested in taking the job. Scott Parker is also one name that is linked. But he is also being considered for the England U-21 job.

It is hard to predict how Martinez will perform once he comes in. Fans would not have envisaged Mauricio Pochettino to take the club to a Champions League final when he was appointed. Neither would they have expected Jose Mourinho to be sacked within 17 months.
