Transfer News: Real Madrid opt against signing Manchester United superstar Paul Pogba

According to Marca (h/t Daily Mail), Spanish giants Real Madrid have opted against making a move for Manchester United star Paul Pogba in the 2022 summer transfer window.

The French international is one of the best players in world football when on song. However, little of that has been on consistent show at Old Trafford. This has led to much frustration and Pogba’s signing can be seen as largely an underwhelming one.

He has just months left on his current deal and could potentially leave the club for free at the end of the season. Doing so would be a cruel way to repay the Red Devils who splashed a then world-record fee to sign him in 2016.

As things stand, it remains unclear if Pogba sees a future for himself at the Theatre of Dreams. With Rangnick set to take over until the end of the campaign, Man United will have a real visionary in charge for the immediate future. Just what impact it can have on Pogba’s decision remains to be seen.

Long linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu, Pogba could potentially have considered the move an option. Real, however, have other ideas and are seemingly focussing their attention elsewhere.

The Spaniards believe the Frenchman won’t fit in at the club and they are better off strengthening other positions. That is saying something given that he can be signed on a free once his contract at Old Trafford expires. The fact that Real would pass on one of the best midfielders in world football in the prime of his career says much.

Not worth the trouble?

While the La Liga giants acknowledge his talents, they appear happy with the midfield options already at their disposal. The trio of Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, and Casemiro is not getting any younger but still packs a punch.

Having signed Eduardo Camavinga last summer, it can be argued that Real are already planning for the future. With Federico Valverde and Antonio Blanco also in the mix, maybe Los Blancos have the right idea.

What exactly this means for Man United remains to be seen. Pogba is an excellent player but the drama he and his agent, Mino Raiola, cause also make him a high maintenance asset. Having enjoyed more misses than hits in red, maybe it is time for both parties to move on.

Whether or not Pogba decides to stay, Man United will do well to sign one or two more dynamic midfielders in the upcoming transfer windows. Nemanja Matic is not getting any younger while Fred and Scott McTominay could arguably use some serious competition for starts.

Even Bruno Fernandes has shown himself to be a mortal in recent weeks. The Red Devils will be advised well to add strength in depth rather than put all their eggs in one basket. One way or another, it is about time we addressed it.
