Alexia Putellas will miss the European Championships and a considerable part of next season with an anterior cruciate ligament tear.

The Spanish Football Federation confirmed a report from Cadena COPE and Mundo Deportivo on Tuesday evening which revealed that Putellas had injured her knee in training.

Putellas is the reigning Ballon d’Or winner and was widely considered to be one of the stand out performers at this summer Euros.

But she was filmed leaving a hospital in the UK on Thursday on crutches before heading into a vehicle.

The RFEF have now confirmed that after tests at the King Edward VII Hospital in London, that doctors have diagnosed an anterior cruciate ligament tear which will likely see Putellas miss at least six months of action.

Spain were thought to be one of the pre-tournament favourites but now must do without Putellas as well as Jennifer Hermoso who also misses out through injury.
