Luciano Spalletti explains why he only made three changes to the starting XI as Italy take on Israel and gives some clues as to his first substitutions in the Nations League too.

“The lads did so well the other day and I want to see if they will be able to have the same approach,” Spalletti told RAI Sport.

“We changed a few things, as Donnarumma is on a yellow card, whereas Retegui starts because this is a game we need to win.”

Samuele Ricci is also sent to the bench after impressive performances which earned him attention from Manchester City and Milan on the transfer market, replaced by Juventus midfielder Fagioli.

Spalletti drops some hints as to the changes he will make in the second half this evening.

“I brought along Zaniolo and will probably need an extra midfielder to step in during the second half, as our players run hard in that role.”

While Israel are rock bottom of the Nations League group after zero points from three games, they were able to score in each of them against France, Belgium and Italy.

“Israel have changed quite a few players since the first match. I did expect them to have the same tactical system against France, they will use a five-man defence with one more attacking wing-back, but we are seeing no surprises.”
