Serie B side SPAL have sacked Daniele De Rossi after 17 games in charge and replaced him with his former international teammate Massimo Oddo.

De Rossi took charge of the club four months ago following the departure of Roberto Venturato. He signed a deal until 2024.

This job was the 39-year-old’s first stint as a head coach. He had previously worked as an assistant coach on Roberto Mancini’s Italy team that won the 2020 European Championships.

However, De Rossi failed to turn SPAL’s fortunes around. They won only three of their 16 league games under him and are dangerously close to Serie C relegation.

They crashed out of the Coppa Italia following a 1-0 loss to Genoa in the second round.

SPAL have not won any of their last four Serie B games. The club is in danger of a drop to the third division, and president Joe Tacopina has moved to sack another coach.

The famous attorney had pushed for De Rossi. He wanted fresh ideas and even looked at the former AS Roma midfielder before 2022.

But De Rossi has not worked out at the club. He will now hope to rebuild his coaching career somewhere else.

He was linked with several jobs before Spezia and could find other offers coming his way.

Oddo comes in hoping to first drag the club out of the bottom three this season.

The 46-year-old former full-back is not as inexperienced as his compatriot, having garnered coaching experience in Serie B and C.

Although SPAL fans will be wary of Oddo’s unimpressive managerial record, only time will tell whether the former AC Milan and Lazio man can help the Biancazzurri avoid the drop to Serie C.
