“The national team has given me everything and allowed me to grow as a player and as a person from the lower levels,” read a statement released via the playmaker’s official Twitter account.

Silva is the second high-profile Spanish player to announce his international retirement in quick succession, after Gerard Piqué did the same over the weekend.

The former Valencia star has two more years remaining on his contract at the Etihad Stadium, after which he intends to return to Spain to finish his career.
