Spain Women get their Women’s Euro 2025 campaign underway against Portugal Women at Stadion Wankdorf on Thursday 3rd July at 8pm (UK time). Spain are the favourites to win Euro 2025, having already claimed their spot as world champions two years ago. Portugal will be hoping to cause a big upset. This game will be broadcast live in the UK on ITV.
Spain have won their past two games against Portugal by an aggregate score of 11-3, scoring at least four goals in both matches.
Claudia Pina was directly involved in 0.99 goals per 90 minutes for Barcelona in Liga F in 2024-25.
Spain are favourites to win Euro 2025, as they are for practically every tournament they enter at the moment. Three years ago, Spain were knocked out in the quarter-finals but many felt that tournament was affected by La Roja losing both Alexia Putellas and Jenni Hermoso to injury before it started. It was Spain’s third successive quarter-final exit at the European Championship, with just four appearances overall.
But this is Spain’s period of dominance, which started with winning the World Cup in 2023. They cruised through qualifying for Euro 2025 with five wins from six games, losing once. Spain also go into the tournament having won their Uefa Nations League group. There, they also won five of their six games, with just one defeat to England. Spain enter Euro 2025 on a run of four consecutive competitive wins, scoring 18 goals.
Portugal are at the European Championship for the third time, all coming in consecutive tournaments. And they’re looking to make it out of the group for the first time. They’ve won one of their six games in the tournament so far, losing four with one draw. Three years ago, Portugal finished bottom of their group with one point from three matches, a draw against Switzerland.
Portugal were in the second league of Euro 2025 qualifying, finishing top of their group with 16 points from six games — that’s five wins and one draw. But that only secured a spot in the play-offs, with Portugal having to win two more ties to reach Euro 2025. Of course, they did that, beating Azerbaijan 8-1 on aggregate in the first round. Things were closer in the second round, but Portugal sealed their spot at Euro 2025 by beating Czech Republic 3-2. Portugal go into Euro 2025 with four defeats from their six games in 2025, which have come in their past four matches.
Spain have a host of talent in their squad, so eyes will be on how Montserrat Tome fit them into a starting XI. Laia Codina misses out due to injury, but Spain have the likes of Laia Aleixandri and Irene Paredes to start at centre-back. Aitana Bonmati will run the midfield, likely alongside Patri Guijarro and Alexia Putellas.
Portugal are yet to name their final squad, but there’s a general idea of the 23 players that will travel to Switzerland. Kika Nazareth will be hoping to score past some of her Barcelona teammates.
Spain have won both games against Portugal in 2025, securing victories home and away in the Uefa Nations League. La Roja have won six of their seven meetings with their Iberian neighbours, losing the other.
