It will be a busy summer for Unai Simon, who is expected to be Spain’s number one goalkeeper for the European Championship in Germany. He will go into the tournament with absolutely no doubts about his future, having put pen to paper on a new contract with Athletic Club.
The 26-year-old has had an excellent season, and a clean sheet against Rayo Vallecano on Saturday would secure his first-ever Zamora Trophy. 24 hours before taking to the pitch at Vallecas, confirmation can come down of a new five-year deal.
Notably, Simon’s new contract does not include a release clause, as he simply has no plans to leave Athletic Club – unless he is forced out. After signing on until 2029, he revealed his desire to become the best goalkeeper in world football.
“I would love to be the best goalkeeper in the world, but only whilst being part of this club. It’s very ambitious, sometimes a bit crazy, but we don’t lose anything by trying. We know how difficult it is to win titles here, but it’s something wonderful and unique and it’s much more worthwhile than winning different titles with other clubs.”
