The agent of goalkeeper Josep Martinez says that he “respects the decision” to start Yann Sommer ahead of him at Inter Milan.
Martinez’s agent Sergio Barila spoke to Italian outlet Calciomercato.it. He also added that the 26-year-old believes he can be at Inter “for years.”
Goalkeeper Martinez joined Inter from Genoa during the summer transfer window.
The Spanish international arrived as the player the Nerazzurri decided to make both the backup to Yann Sommer in goal, and the Swiss veteran’s long-term successor.
Sommer is 35. The former Bayern Munich keeper may not have declined yet – but he can’t play forever.
Therefore, Inter decided that it was necessary to have a succession plan in place.
So far, however, Martinez has not played a single minute this season.
Rather, Inter coach Simone Inzaghi has decided to start Sommer in every single match that the team have played between Serie A and the Champions League thus far in the campaign.
The feeling is that a chance for Martinez isn’t too far away. But so far, the former RB Leipzig and Las Palmas man has yet to get on the pitch for Inter.
As far as Sommer consistently starting, Martinez’s agent Barila said that “It’s the coach’s decision.”
“Josep trains so that he’s prepared when the opportunity arrives,” the agent went on.
“So that he’s able to provide the performance that the team needs.”
“On a personal level, I’m sure the fans will be happy with him,” Barila predicted.
“And the dressing room has welcomed him very well. They’ve helped him to integrate into the team quickly.”
The agent went on that “If Inter chose to sign Josep, it’s because they were 100% convinced that he’s at the level required.”
“Now another goalkeeper is on the pitch for them. But when he plays, he’ll show that the club made the right choice.”
“He respects the decision of the coach,” said Barila.
“He works so that he’s ready to give his best when the time comes.”
“And if he’s chosen to join Inter, it’s because he’s convinced he can be Inter’s goalkeeper for many years,” Barila said.
“For now he has to train hard, have patience, and help his teammates. He knows that he’s at one of the biggest clubs in Italy and Europe. It’s a step forward in his career.”
