Athletic Club and Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon is set for wrist surgery this week, having come out victorious from Euro 2024 with La Roja. Simon has been nursing discomfort in his wrist for a large chunk of the season.

According to Relevo, Simon will likely miss three to four months, and will not return to action before October, ruling him out for likely the first quarter of the season. He has been playing through the injury, but it has not shown through his performances. He will miss at least eight La Liga games, and is likely to be absent for several Europa League clashes too.

In Julen Agirrezabala, who started throughout their Copa del Rey run to the trophy last season, Athletic have a quality replacement in line to compensate for Simon’s absence. The latest in a school of goalkeeping in Bilbao, at just 23 years of age, the same age when Simon won his place in the Athletic goal, he looks to have the potential to become a quality goalkeeper.
