Spain held by Greece after Inigo own goal

Spain were held 1-1 by Greece in their World Cup qualifier on Thursday night.

La Roja looked to be in cruise control after Koke and Alvaro Morata combined on a first-half goal, with the Juventus man volleying into net, but an Inigo Martinez penalty gifted the Greeks the equalising goal in one of the most one-sided draws that a football fan will ever see.

In the first-half, Greece were also allowing Spain time and almost paid the price when Dani Olmo stung a shot off the crossbar. Moments later, Luis Enrique's men finally picked the lock when Koke lofted a pass into Morata, who took the ball off his chest and volleyed home for a 1-0 lead.

Luis Enrique made his first change during the intermission, with Sergio Ramos replaced by Inigo Martinez, and the Athletic Club man almost immediately made an impact, albeit a negative one for the hosts.

Martinez cleared a ball in his own area but left his boot studs up and followed through into the leg of Giorgos Masouras. Italian referee Marco Guida pointed to the spot and Anastasios Bakasetas hammered in the penalty kick to hand Greece an unlikely equaliser at 1-1.

Luis Enrique went to his bench for a spark and summoned youngsters Pedri and Bryan Gil for Olmo and Sergio Canales respectively.

Spain pushed hard for a winner and looked to be on the verge of striking after a beautiful one-two combination between Morata and Jose Luis Gaya, but the latter's cross was just out of the reach of Mikel Oyarzabal.

In the end, Spain were unable to create the scoring chances and shots on target needed to get the winner, shaking their heads in dismay at the sound of the final whistle with a mere share of the spoils.
