There are surely few things worse in football than making a major error leading to a goal while playing for your country.
And that’s exactly what Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón did in Monday’s Euro 2020 last 16 clash with Croatia.
La Roja had made a decent start in Copenhagen when, after 20 minutes, Pedri played a harmless ball back to his goalkeeper.
But Simón must have taken his eye off the ball as he tried to control it, and it spun off his foot and into the net, to the delight of Croatia’s players and supporters.
And that puts Own Goal on nine for the tournament already!
⁉️ - At EURO 2020, 9️⃣ own goals have been recorded. As many as all other EUROs combined. #Euro2020–
On the bright side for Simón, the goal will go down in the history books as a Pedri own goal.
The poor guy must have wanted the ground to open up and swallow him whole. What a nightmare.
