Spain have started Euro 2024 like a house on fire, securing their passage to the knockout stages with three wins from three in Group B. We take a deeper look at La Roja.

Group B contained Spain, holders Italy, Croatia and Albania and looked on paper at least to be one of the toughest groups at the competition. La Roja however eased to three wins without conceding a goal to top the group and make some of the other big-hitters at Euro 2024 sit up and take noticed.

Spain last won the competition in 2012, making it back to back European Championship wins and are one of the favourites to repeat their performance this summer. They’ve got the talent at their disposal but do they possess the killer instinct to go all the way in Germany?

Group B – Matchweek One

Spain kicked off their Group B campaign in style, racing into a three goal lead against Croatia before the half-time break in Berlin. Alvaro Morata, Fabian Ruiz and Dani Carvajal ensured the points were heading la Roja’s way despite a spirited attempt to get back into the game from Vatreni in the second half.

Group B – Matchweek Two

Spain may have needed a Ricardo Calafiori own goal to beat Italy on Matchday Two but the reality is that they should have won this game much more comfortably. La Roja dominated possession and took 20 shots to Italy’s four and it was clear to see that which of these two European powerhouses will be the biggest threat in the latter stages of the tournament from this clash in Gelsenkirchen.

Group B – Matchweek Three

A very heavily rotated Spain outfit were still able to get the job done on Matchday Three against Albania, winning 1-0 to ensure they were the only team to get through the group stages without dropping a point or conceding a goal at Euro 2024. Ferran Torres’ early goal was enough to separate the two teams.

Round of 16

Spain can hardly have expected to come up against an opponent they know better than Georgia in the Round of 16. These two teams faced each other in qualifying for the competition and la Roja were dominant in both matches, winning 1-7 in Tblisi and following that up with a 3-1 home victory. The Crusaders will be playing without pressure though having defied expectations to reach this far and they did shock Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal in their last outing, winning 2-0 against the Selecao in Group F.
