Spanish national team head coach Luis de la Fuente has this evening revealed the identity of his dream addition to his La Roja squad.

De la Fuente sat down for an interview with Movistar Futbol, during which he was drawn on a whole host of topics.

It was one particular train of questions, centering on some of world football’s finest players, which has since piqued particular attention, though.

Asked for his take on the ‘GOAT’, the Spanish tactician opted for a former Barcelona star, in the form of Johan Cruyff.

“The best player in history? Johan Cruyff.”

From here, De la Fuente was then questioned on which one player from across the world of football he would ‘sign’ for Spain, if afforded the opportunity.

And the 62-year-old showcased little hesitance in opting for another icon in Barcelona, namely eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi:

“A player I would like to sign for the Spanish national team? Leo Messi.”

Interestingly, had things played out differently, Messi could well have ended up plying his trade at international level with Spain.

The veteran attacker qualifies for Spanish citizenship through a Catalan great grandfather, born in Balaguer.

However, Messi made it abundantly clear, even from his teenage years, that he only ever had eyes for the Argentine national team.
