And the RFEF have moved quickly to appoint former U21 coach De la Fuente as Luis Enrique’s successor.

The 61-year-old has worked with the RFEF since 2013 and in 2015 he won the U19 European Championship, before repeating the feat with the U21s in 2019. He also guided Spain to a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

De la Fuenta has actually coached the senior team once before – as a stand-in for Luis Enrique for a friendly against Lithuania just before Euro 2020 when the squad and staff was heavily affected by Covid-19.

But his first official match in charge is set to come in March, when Spain begin the qualification process for Euro 2024 against Norway.
