Aitana Bonmati named player of the tournament at Euro 2025
Euro 2025 has come to its conclusion and here at SheKicks we have taken a look at who we believe makes the team of the tournament.
With England retaining their title there are four stars from the Lionesses who feature in the team.
Although they weren’t able to win the Euros, Spain looked formidable until the final hurdle. It is no surprise therefore that much of the team is dominated by the finalists.
The only German player to get in our team of the tournament is exceptional goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger.
Berger single-handedly kept Germany in the tournament with some incredible saves including one against France that was without a doubt the stop of the tournament.
In the quarter-finals against France Berger made nine saves and the 34-year-old went one better in the semi’s against Spain with nine stops
England’s Hannah Hampton of course must get a mention for her heroics in the knockouts, but Berger was a shining light in the Germany team.
One of England’s veterans played almost every minute of the tournament and Lucy Bronze was tough as ever throughout Euro 2025.
The Chelsea full back had to receive treatment in the latter stages of a lot of games and after the final she revealed that she was playing with a fractured leg throughout the competition.
Lucy Bronze played all of Euro 2025 with a fractured tibia
It was impossible to tell that Bronze was hurt at all for the duration of the Euros and England often rallied around the gritty defender who was relentless in her pursuit of a second title.
Spain’s captain for the tournament, Irene Paredes, was another who will feel hard done by after a disappointing defeat to England in the final.
Paredes was one of very few players to play every single minute of Euro 2025 and with Spain only conceding four goals in their six games, the Barcelona star was a vital part of the team’s route to the final.
The 34-year-old also grabbed a rare goal against Belgium in the group stage – her second in tournament history.
Partnering Spain’s captain in defence for our team of the tournament is another captain fantastic in Leah Williamson.
The Arsenal and England superstar remained a constant wall for the Lionesses at the back and was only subbed off against Italy as the Lionesses chased a comeback and in extra time vs Sweden with an injury.
Williamson made more line-breaking passes than any other defender at the tournament, proving that central defenders aren’t just there to stop goals.
There was only one Dutch player who got close to making the team of the tournament but Esmee Brugts earns a deserved spot in the lineup.
Although the Netherlands got knocked out in the group stage, they were drawn in the ‘group of death’ and every game felt like a knockout.
Brugts’ pace down the left hand side provided a constant threat for her team and despite not being too influential defending, the Barcelona full back did get on the scoresheet against Wales.
Aitana Bonmati is the first midfielder in our team of the tournament and there is no debating she was the player of the tournament.
Bonmati didn’t start the first two games of Euro 2025 as she recovered from viral meningitis.
Once she returned Spain looked like a completely different side, as the midfield maestro covered every blade of grass to carry her nation to the final.
Patricia Guijarro only missed three minutes at Euro 2025 in Switzerland and there was so many reasons for that.
There are so many stats that Guijarro dominated during the tournament and her passing especially was something to marvel at throughout.
Guijarro provided a constant shield in front of the Spain defence this summer but she was also a threat from set pieces with one goal scored (against Italy).
All three of Spain’s midfielders make it into our team of the tournament with Alexia Putellas taking the final spot.
Although she became quieter in the knockouts, Putellas was influential for the world champions during their group stage routs.
The two-time Ballon d’Or winner certainly has a chance of winning what would be a historic third award this year after her three goals at Euro 2025.
It may seem bullish to have all three Spanish midfielders in the team of the tournament despite losing in the final, but the Barcelona trio really showed that they are a level above the rest this summer.
There are a fair few players who could earn the right wing spot in the team of the tournament but Chloe Kelly just takes it after her performance in the final.
Three times Kelly came to England’s rescue late in the day during the knockouts and the Lionesses wouldn’t have won the Euros if it wasn’t for her heroics.
The 27-year-old won two penalty shootouts for England and without her energy off the bench Sarina Wiegman’s team could have been out as early as the quarter-finals.
Although Alessia Russo struggled for goals this summer, she was a constant threat for the reigning European Champions.
The Arsenal and England striker finished her tournament with four assists and two goals – including a crucial header in the final to send the game to extra time.
Spain’s Esther Gonzalez must get an honourable mention for her golden boot (4 goals), but Russo came up big when it mattered most.
One of Spain’s most consistent players from Euro 2025 was Mariona Caldentey. The Arsenal winger played every game at the tournament and continued to impress right until the last minute of extra time in the final.
Caldentey ended Euro 2025 on two goals and two assists, with her last goal coming in the final as her bullet header put Spain in front.
Even though Spain lost in the final Caldentey remains a solid contender for the Ballon d’Or this year.
Having won the Champions League with Arsenal and impressing in Switzerland, the 29-year-old could still beat her international teammates to the prestigious award.
