Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl is interested in signing West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone when the transfer window reopens, according to journalist Tom Barclay.

What's the latest news involving Johnstone?

Johnstone won his third England cap during the international break and even claimed an assist during the 5-0 World Cup qualifier hammering of Andorra.

He has remained with West Brom despite their relegation from the Premier League last term.

Johnstone was heavily linked with a move to West Ham United during the summer, but the east Londoners saw a £10million bid rejected by the Baggies and the goalkeeper's current employers were looking to recoup double that fee.

Rather than meeting Albion's demands, West Ham opted to turn their attentions to Alphonse Areola, who they signed on a season-long loan with the option of making his switch from Paris Saint-Germain permanent.

Shortly after his appointment, West Brom head coach Valerien Ismael confirmed he expected Johnstone to leave the Hawthorns in favour of an immediate return to the top flight.

However, as a move failed to come to fruition and Johnstone entered the final year of his Baggies contract, Ismael revealed the club had entered talks over a new deal in August.

It has been reported that Southampton have joined West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur in courting the 28-year-old while his future remains up in the air and mulling over making a January move.

What has Tom Barclay said about Johnstone?

Current first choice Saints goalkeeper Alex McCarthy's contract expires next summer, but the shot-stopper has confirmed he is enjoying life at St Mary's and interested in extending his stay.

But Barclay believes that could depend on whether Southampton win the race for Johnstone's signature.

The journalist admits Johnstone's performance on international duty would have caught Hasenhuttl's eye.

Barclay told GIVEMESPORT: "They are interested in Sam Johnsone, who obviously stood out for England against Andorra.

"That's going to be something to weigh up as well."
