Southampton have beaten the likes of Roma in order to secure a deal for 16-year-old Reading sensation Diamond Edwards.
That’s according to a report from Football Insider, who claim the Saints have won the battle to land the 16-year-old attacking midfielder after agreeing to personal terms on a deal.
It’s believed that Southampton are now set to pay Reading a ‘significant’ compensation fee after the teenager rejected Reading’s offer to give him his first professional contract.
Though Edwards was determined to continue his footballing career abroad, manager Ralph Hasenhüttl and company is said to have convinced the England youth international to develop his career at one of the finest academies in the world.
Earlier this month, Southampton beat Manchester United and Liverpool to the signature of 16-year-old Ramello Mitchell from Birmingham City.
Though the Saints paid £300,000 in compensation fee at the time, the deal could rise to £1m.
