Journalist Tom Barclay has backed Adam Armstrong to rediscover his best form when Southampton do battle with Leeds United this weekend.

What's the latest news involving Armstrong?

Armstrong made the move to St Mary's after a deal worth up to £15million was struck with Championship side Blackburn Rovers in August.

Saints managed to fight off interest from the likes of West Ham United, Everton and newly-promoted Norwich City to clinch his services.

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl moved quickly to sign the striker after seeing Danny Ings, who bagged 46 goals in 100 Saints appearances, move onto pastures new by completing a £25million switch to Aston Villa.

Armstrong headed to the south coast after finding the back of the net 64 times during a hugely productive spell on the books of Blackburn.

While he hit the ground running in his new surroundings thanks to a debut goal in the opening day defeat to Everton, the 24-year-old has failed to get his name on the scoresheet since.

However, Hasenhuttl spoke out last month and backed Armstrong to produce the goods in front of goal once he has adapted to the demands of the Premier League.

What has Tom Barclay said about Armstrong?

Having been on target 29 times last season, Armstrong has scored just once for his new employers.

Southampton are set to welcome Leeds to St Mary's tomorrow, with Marcelo Bielsa's side conceding 14 goals in their first seven Premier League fixtures of the campaign.

Barclay believes Leeds' leaky defence could present Armstrong with the perfect opportunity to rediscover his best form after being put through his paces at Saints' Staplewood training ground during the international break.

The journalist told GIVEMESPORT: "During the international break, Armstrong would have been on the training pitch so he can work on things.

"He'd hope, particularly with Leeds at home and the way they've been shipping goals, this will be the chance to really put some of that work into practice."
