Southampton could miss out on top managerial target Danny Rohl as the German coach is reportedly "interested" in replacing Ruud van Nistelrooy at Leicester City.

Rohl has emerged as the Saints' first choice to replace Ivan Juric following the club's relegation to the EFL Championship. He previously worked at St Mary's as Ralph Hassenhuttl's assistant before holding the same role with Bayern Munich and the Germany national team.

The 36-year-old has since impressed in his first managerial role at Sheffield Wednesday, guiding the Owls out of a relegation battle and into the comfort of mid-table. There were even slight hopes of a push for Premier League promotion this season and his excellent work hasn't gone unnoticed.

Danny Rohl Could Opt For Leicester Job Despite Southampton Interest

Football Insider reports that Rohl is a man in-demand and looks increasingly likely to leave Hillsborough this summer. Southampton are keen on bringing him back to the South Coast while there is talk of Bundesliga giants RB Leipzig also adding him to their list of potential Marco Rose replacements.

Leicester could be frontrunners, though, as Rohl is said to fancy taking over from Van Nistelrooy. The latter's future is in jeopardy amid a disappointing spell in charge of the Foxes, suffering the drop. and in dismal form.

Change is afoot at the King Power as the East Midlands outfit will head into a new season without Jamie Vardy for the first time since 2012. Their all-time top scorer is leaving the club when his contract expires in June. Whomever is in charge come the start of the 2025-26 EFL Championship season has a massive job on their hands without their talismanic skipper.

If Rohl were to be the man to take that task on, it would be a massive blow for Southampton as their former assistant knows the club well and is one of the most exciting tacticians in the country. He's steered Wednesday to 15 wins and 18 defeats in 45 games this season. He'd also be the ideal man to work alongside his compatriot Johannes Spors, who arrived at St Mary's earlier this year.

Should the club miss out on Rohl, they could turn to RC Lens' Will Still, with whom they have reportedly held "personalised talks." Still has yet to manage in his homeland of England, and has caught the eye during his time in France. The 32-year-old has two years left on his contract with Lens, who have just missed out on European qualification in Ligue 1 this season.

The race for Rohl will take an interesting turn this weekend and he may have an eye on how Southampton get on in their Premier League encounter. The Saints visit the King Power to face Leicester on Saturday (May 3) with both sides eager to get a long-awaited win under their belts.
