Southampton have improved their current Premier League standing in a Premier League transfer metric.
Though Southampton will find themselves sorrowfully relocating to the Championship, the grief of not trying enough will not cross their minds. And there's no two ways around it because the Saints left no stone unturned in attempting on-field fixes throughout the previous year.
Be it bringing coaches, lining up countless playing combinations or penning a host of transfer deals, Southampton did it all only to see their efforts become unrewarded. Now, Premier League has only a Championship invite as a consolation gift for relegated outfits but the transfer market doesn't distinguish clubs on these grounds.
Totally agree, Southampton will not earn a transfer-winners cup, but their negotiating legacy won't have to make do with a last-place finish either.
According to a report from the Daily Echo, Southampton emerged as the second last English top-flight club when it comes to offering sizeable paychecks to transfer agents.
In all honesty, this statistic is an underrated transfer window metric but this nineteenth-ranked outcome can convey how Southampton competed on the transfers front in the previous couple of windows.
The Saints' transfer funds were obviously going to portray an image of a struggling team in front of interested players but them not remaining rock-bottom is indeed a sign of progress. On a flattering note, this list also hides how a majority of them fared against their lofty Southampton moves.
Now, the Saints are clearly out of the running to challenge any Premier League clubs for a similar record come next season. Hence, the club's transfer chiefs should shift their attention to making nearly every transfer call count when those recruitments start doing their talking on the pitch.
