It was sodden in north London as both sides looked to return to the top flight.

And it was Leeds who had the first effort on goal after six minutes as Wilfried Gnonto found space outside the area but saw his soft shot saved with ease.

The Saints had their own effort a few minutes later as Will Smallbone’s free kick was pushed away by Illan Meslier.

But it was the south coast side who eventually did break the deadlock on 25 minutes as Adam Armstrong beat the Leeds offside trap and finished brilliantly into the far corner.

Armstrong was at it again just before the break but his effort across goal was palmed away from danger by Meslier.

Into the second half and almost immediately Crysencio Summerville had a curled effort from the edge of the area that went just wide of the far post.

Russell Martin’s side had a great opportunity to double their lead just after the hour mark but Samuel Edozie’s one-on-one strike went just over the bar.

With five minutes to go Leeds were pushing for an equaliser and they thought they had got it through Dan James and his half volley from the edge of the area.

The Wales international though, couldn’t quite get enough dip on the shot and saw his strike cannon back off the crossbar.
