After 90 minutes, Southampton managed to draw 1-1 with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the Carabao Cup after Che Adams’ goal levelled the scoreline having seen Kai Havertz put the hosts ahead, only for the Saints to lose 4-3 on penalties, ultimately crashing out of the competition.

One player that featured in the match that did not step up to the mark was Saints winger Nathan Tella.

During his time on the pitch, Tella failed to register even one shot at goal, completed just five out of the 10 passes he attempted, made no key passes, crosses or long balls, lost possession on 15 occasions and had fewer touches of the ball (25) than Saints goalkeeper Fraser Forster (50).

Ultimately earning himself a disappointing overall match rating of 6.2, making him the lowest-rated Southampton player that started the match according to SofaScore.

Taking this into account, this says to us that Tella was a passenger in the game and had very little attacking input for his side.

It also makes us feel that he let Ralph Hasenhuttl down given how the Saints boss showed enough faith in the winger to start the game against Thomas Tuchel’s side after not making an appearance in Southampton’s previous Premier League match in their 2-2 draw against Burnley.

So far this season, Tella has only made three appearances for the Saints in the Premier League, starting just one of them and yet to register a goal or assist, showing that he is not a pivotal figure for the club.

Is Nathan Tella good enough to play regular senior football for Southampton?

Southampton signed Tella to their U23 side back in April 2017 from Arsenal’s U18 side for an undisclosed fee.

Since then, the 22-year-old, who is currently valued at £1.8m according to Transfermarkt, has gone on to make 29 appearances for the first team in which he has managed to score two goals and provide three assists in the process after making 44 appearances for their B team.
